Recently, a series of reports on "Transforming" to New Quality Productive Forces by Chengdu Daily Jinguan News has focused on Shiliankangjian, an enterprise in Chengdu Advanced Medical Science Center, to investigate how its innovative "Demonstration Project for Transformation and Application of Human Dental Follicle Stem Cells in the Treatment of Periodontal Disease" drives the generation of new industries, new models and new momentum with scientific and technological innovation, thus injecting surging impetus into Chengdu's high-quality development.

    In recent years, "stem cell and regenerative medicine research" has become a frontier field in the development of modern life science. As the origin cell of organisms, stem cells are primitive cells with self-replication, multidirectional differentiation, and homing potentials, often referred to as "the seed of life".

    In the race for the forefront of stem cell and regenerative medicine, "Chengdu Power" is actively engaged. The Demonstration Project for Transformation and Application of Human Dental Follicle Stem Cells in the Treatment of Periodontal Disease is one notable example.

    It is learned that currently, Sichuan University and Chengdu Shiliankangjian Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Shiliankangjian"), an enterprise in Chengdu Advanced Medical Science Center, are working together to tackle key problems, accelerate the construction of stem cell-based periodontal functional tissue modules and the transformation and application demonstration of new technologies for clinical treatment of periodontal disease.

   
     The Demonstration Project for Transformation and Application of Human Dental Follicle Stem Cells in the Treatment of Periodontal Disease has taken the lead in carrying out stem cell-based research on tooth regeneration and biological roots in China, and created a new method for cell-free fat regeneration and soft tissue repair using adipose stem cells and extracellular vesicles.

    Besides, the world's first clinical study project on dental follicle stem cells for periodontal disease approved by the National Health Commission of the PRC has completed a phase I clinical study at West China Hospital of Stomatology.

    Shiliankangjian is located in Building E7, Chengdu Advanced Medical Science Center. Its founder Professor Tian Weidong is the chief scientist of the National 973 Key R&D Program and a professor at West China Hospital of Stomatology. He has been deeply engaged in stem cell and regenerative medicine research for more than 20 years and has made many basic theoretical breakthroughs and technological innovations in the fields of dental stem cells and adipose stem cells.

    "The treatment of periodontal disease has remained a clinical challenge. The existing surgical and drug treatment methods are difficult to completely solve the problem of loosening and eventually falling off teeth caused by periodontal disease." According to Tian Weidong, on the basis of more than 20 years of basic research in the early stage, his team has found a new method that can effectively promote local tissue regeneration and repair through local transplantation of exogenous stem cells. "This advancement aids in the regeneration of damaged periodontal tissues, and in some cases, even bones."

      There are several major innovations behind this.

    Firstly, our goal is to treat diseases by promoting the regeneration of teeth's own tissues, which represents a disruptive treatment concept;

      Secondly, after extensive preliminary basic research, we have identified dental follicle stem cells as the most promising in terms of stem cell selection;

    Thirdly, in terms of treatment methods, new technologies enable precise cell transplantation without impacting the entire body.

    More importantly, Shiliankangjian has realized the clinical application of dental functional tissue modules. In 2021, after the stem cell clinical study was filed by the National Health Commission of the PRC, Tian Weidong and his team launched the world's first clinical study project on dental follicle stem cells for periodontal disease at West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University.

    The phase I clinical study was completed last July. Preliminary data show that the method is effective in treating periodontal disease, which greatly boosts the confidence of Tian Weidong and his team.

    Currently, Shiliankangjian is making every effort to promote the application and transformation of relevant technologies, carry out R&D of stem cell drugs, and promote the clinical transformation and application of cell therapy.
