The "Twin Towers" of the Financial City in Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, also known as Tianfu Twin Towers and Jiaozi Twin Towers, consist of two 220-meter super high-rise towers. On November 23, 2022, Tianfu Jiangxi Laboratory and Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory (Center of Frontier Medicine) were established and unveiled in Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone. The former is located in the Future Science and Technology City, while the latter is located in the Xinchuan Area of Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone. They gaze at each other from a distance and complement each other, becoming the dazzling "Gemini" of scientific and technological innovation in the western highland of innovation.
It is said that Tianfu laboratories are the "reserve forces" for Sichuan to benchmark against and strive for national laboratories. They have always been the "top star" of Sichuan's science and technology circle. Centering on three advantageous fields including electronic information, life sciences, and ecological environment, Sichuan has planned for a total of four laboratories to establish a laboratory cluster that serves national strategies.
Unlike previous national and provincial key laboratory systems, Tianfu laboratories are mainly designed for strategic, forward-looking, and basic research according to the model of "provincial overall planning, local subjects, institute support, multi-party participation, entity operations, and full independence". Besides, they should promote interdisciplinary and large-scale collaborative innovation breakthroughs with a major leading role, focus on the development of channels between technological innovation and industrial application, and support the high-quality development of the local economy.
Among them, Tianfu Jiangxi Laboratory relies on partners such as the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China to build frontier research centers for advanced computing, quantum Internet, distributed energy integration, microwave and photonic integration in the fields of electromagnetic space utilization and control, information functional materials and components, electromagnetic perception and ubiquitous interconnection, advanced computing, and brain-inspired intelligence. It empowers nine industrial segments including flexible display, satellite communication, artificial intelligence, advanced computing and data services, quantum technology, 6G communication, high-end software, industrial Internet, and blockchain.
Relying on Sichuan University and other institutions, Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory focuses on five research directions including cutting-edge biotechnology, advanced medical technology, original innovative drugs, precision medicine, and high-precision medical devices. It explores the multidisciplinary and multi-field integration and innovation of "medicine + industry" to empower 10 industrial segments including stem cell therapy, digital diagnosis and treatment, synthetic biology, brain science, vaccines, blood products, high-end preparations, high-end biological materials, stomatology, and aesthetic medicine.

On January 17 this year, the first council of Tianfu Jiangxi Laboratory was officially established and the first director, executive director, deputy director, and academic committee members were appointed. On January 28, four scientist teams and two public technology platforms in the first batch, including the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, settled in Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory.
Subsequently, the Laboratory of Intelligent Collaborative Computing, the first national innovation platform, was established and operated in Tianfu Jiangxi Laboratory for the joint development of the Frontier Research Center for Advanced Computing.

Recently, the Frontier Research Center for Quantum Internet has officially settled in. The core team comes from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. It gathers scientific research forces from the University of Science and Technology of China and Huazhong University of Science and Technology and attracts top talents in various fields such as management and industry. The center will develop a series of quantum Internet chips and key equipment, promote some application scenarios such as quantum computing power, quantum cryptography, and quantum finance, and open up the industrial chain in related research fields such as quantum communication, quantum computing, quantum precision measurement, and quantum storage. On October 18, the first academic committee of Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory (Center of Frontier Medicine) was established. Wei Yuquan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former Vice President of Sichuan University, was appointed as the director of the academic committee of Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory. Besides, 28 academicians and experts from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, including Zhang Xingdong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, were appointed as members of the first academic committee of the laboratory. Tianfu Jiangxi Laboratory and Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory may not be physically tall or large, and they lack a certain visual impact. However, they are not short of foresight, symbolism, guidance, and innovation. They even possess a touch of lifestyle charm and humanistic elegance.
Inside the building, floor-to-ceiling bay windows, open conference areas, coffee tables, and gymnasiums are dotted on the scientific research floor of Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory.
"The Frontier Research Center for Advanced Computing has been in substantial operations for a short time, but it provides a beautiful working environment and diversified supporting facilities. "Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory does not center on laboratory tables or experimental benches but on scientists and achievement exchanges. We can feel the respect for talents." Geng Jia, a professor and doctoral supervisor of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, once worked in two national laboratories overseas. He highly praised the exhibition and communication space of the laboratory.
Apart from the "micro-environment" such as the natural environment and office conditions, scientists pay more attention to the "macro-environment" closely related to their professions.
"Biomedical treatment, education, research, and production can be integrated within a few square kilometers. This is a rare case." Geng Jia explained that Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory is opposite the National Medical Center, close to the West China Hospital of Sichuan University (Eastern Area Hospital) under construction, and diagonally opposite the Advanced Medical Achievement Transformation Center. Scientific research, talent training, achievement transformation, product production, and hospital application can be completed within a few square kilometers. On October 19, the 2023 China Biotech Innovation Conference, a national event in China's biomedical industry, opened in Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone. Nearly 30 academicians, including Deng Zixin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Xingdong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Yu Junchong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Zhang Xuemin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, over 300 major experts, over 1,000 experts and scholars, nearly 20 Fortune Global 500 multinational pharmaceutical companies, and over 50 well-known pharmaceutical companies at home and abroad gathered in Chengdu to seek the innovative development of the healthcare industry.
According to the 2023 Analysis Report on the Development Status of China's Biomedical Industrial Parks (hereinafter referred to as the "Report") released at the conference, Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, as a highland of biotechnology development and a main site for industrial development in Chengdu, belongs to the first echelon regarding comprehensive competitiveness together with Zhongguancun National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone, Suzhou Industrial Park, and Zhangjiang High-tech Industrial Development Zone in Shanghai.
At the conference, Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory officially released the list of the second batch of five projects of the Global Biomedical Young Talent Cultivation Plan. It sincerely invited top teams at home and abroad to "strive to be the best candidates". Besides, it specified that RMB 150 million would be invested in the next three years to support the "competition" of teams in five directions. It would promote the implementation and transformation of major scientific and technological achievements. Participating teams could receive research funds of up to RMB 30 million.
This is the second action for talent introduction after Tianfu Jincheng Laboratory released the first batch of demand lists for projects of "striving to be the best candidates" and "team-based horse racing" to global talents on January 5.
"The core connotation of the 'striving to be the best candidates' project is to focus on clinical needs and market demands, take industrialization as the orientation, aim at key 'bottleneck' technical problems to make scientific and technological breakthroughs, promote the transformation of the project's achievements into products, explore and solve the 'last-mile' problem of achievement transformation, and actively contribute to public health," said the main person in charge of the laboratory.
In recent years, the Chengdu Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone has focused on the introduction and cultivation of high-level talents, gathering 26 academicians, more than 1,100 national and provincial talents, 66 national innovation platforms, and 23 national corporate technology centers. It has established 54 postdoctoral stations of various types, with 1,088 postdoctoral fellows at the stations.
