As the major project of cooperation between Chengdu Municipality and Sichuan University, Chengdu Frontier Medical Center had its delivery ceremony held at Biomedical Innovation Incubation Park (The Phase II of Tianfu Life Science Park) on September 12, which is located in Singapore-Sichuan Hi-tech Innovation Park. The research carrier with a floorage of 9,000 square meters and the industrial carrier with a floorage of 8,500 square meters in the first batch of the carriers have been completed and will be handed over to West China Hospital, West China Second University Hospital and West China Hospital of Stomatology Sichuan University respectively, thus benefiting the first batch of professors who signed up for entrepreneurship.

Chengdu Frontier Medical Center is jointly established by CDHT and Sichuan University to coordinate with the biomedical innovation counterparts in Boston. With the transformational medicine as the innovation objective and the market application as the value orientation, they strive to construct “the community of shared interests, innovation and development,” form a brand new model of “business partners” between schools and local government institutions, integrate and enhance the innovation capabilities, and transform scientific and technological achievements locally.

In 2018, CDHT and Sichuan University signed a cooperation agreement for the joint establishment of the Frontier Medical Center, focusing on such fields as precision medicine, anti-aging research, brain science and perception, regenerative medicine, 3D printing and organ repair, deep-underground medicine[u1] , vaccine and antibody research, medical artificial intelligence and medical big data, and for the innovative research, the industrial technology innovation and the achievement transformation.

Chengdu Frontier Medical Center consists of research and industry, among which, the research part includes the Innovation and R&D Center of the Biological Medicine Innovation and Incubation Park of CDHT (Phase II of Tianfu Life Science Park) and the research building to be built at Huaxi Campus of Sichuan University, while the industrial part is composed of the Incubation Acceleration Center of Singapore-Sichuan Hi-tech Innovation Park and the Industrial Transformation Center of Chengdu Tianfu International Bio-town.

Up to now, Chengdu Frontier Medical Center has initially introduced more than 20 high-level R&D projects such as the Frontier Science Center of Disease Molecular Network and the Medical Big Data Center. Ten companies were set up by professors from Sichuan University at the center, including Chengdu Zeling Biomedical Technology Co., Ltd. and Biotech Solution and Discovery Co., Ltd. The park has introduced ten projects by itself, including PerkinElmer and Farsoon Turing, which have formed interaction with the Frontier Medical Center. The center has introduced two academician-level scientists, 20 scientists from the Changjiang Outstanding Young Scholars Program, and more than 100 professors and research fellows.

Among the projects set up at the center, Sichuan Farsoon Turing Additives Manufacturing Technology Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary of Farsoon Technologies. It will build the 3D printing medical products global center of Farsoon Technologies, global medical R&D center, business center and settlement center. It was reported that Farsoon Technologies is the sole experimental demonstration enterprise of 3D printing intelligent manufacturing in China with the approval of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China.

 “The delivery of the first batch of carriers marks the entry of the Chengdu Frontier Medical Center project into the key stage,” the head of the Bioindustry Bureau of CDHT said, adding that Chengdu Frontier Medical Center commenced the decoration of relevant buildings with a floorage of more than 100,000 square meters. It is expected that the decoration work of more than 70,000 square meters will be completed this November, with both talent and projects being introduced into the center concurrently. It is expected that the Chengdu Frontier Medical Center will drive the output value of Chengdu’s biomedical medicine sector to more than 50 billion yuan annually by 2025, and will introduce 15 academician-level talented people, 50 talented people from the Changjiang Scholars Program and Changjiang Outstanding Young Scholars Program, obtain more than 200 patents, and incubate more than 100 innovative enterprises.

The head of Sichuan University said that as the cooperation between Sichuan University and CDHT deepens, Chengdu Frontier Medical Center will surely become the benchmark project of the cooperation between universities and local government institutions in Chengdu and assist to promote Chengdu’s bioengineering and pharmaceutical industry.
